Back to the Wild

This programme offers students the exciting opportunity to partner in an on-going conservation project to rehabilitate and release orangutans and sun bears back to the wild.

Whilst living at the rescue centre students will engage with real conservationists who will share their passion about the wildlife of Borneo through jungle walks, activities and presentation sessions. Students will also have the chance to learn and practise the scientific skills vital to these conservation efforts such as habitat surveys and behavioural data collection.

The highlight of this trip for most students is the chance to make a real impact on the conservation of species like orangutans and sun bears by taking part in personal impact activities like working to improve the enclosures and creating enrichment toys for the animals. Coming up close with some of the world’s most endangered animals whilst helping to ensure their survival truly makes this a school trip to remember!

As part of this Wild@Heart school trip, students get the chance to:

Live at a wildlife rescue centre in Borneo and see up close the work to rehabilitate endangered animals like sun bears and orangutans back to the wild
Collect behavioural data on orangutans at Semenggoh Orangutan Centre
Visit an Iban long house and take part in cultural activities
Design and make enrichment toys for sun bears
Take part in hands on work such as enclosure maintenance to help increase he welfare of rescued wildlife at the centre
Work at the village school teaching English or sharing a passion for conservation and the environment.

"These are wonderful experiences that I won't forget -planting trees, teaching the village children and especially listening to your knowledge of nature. Tomorrow is Monday and I will have to go to school again. I really miss the jungle, the iron wood tree, the fig tree that stood so grand and dignified compared to the awkward buildings in the city."
